Why Fabric Weight Tells You More Than Fiber Content

What does GSM actually measure?

Grams per square metre — literally the weight of a one-metre square of the fabric.

It sounds crude and it is the single most predictive number about a fabric you can get.

Weight tells you density, and density determines almost everything you care about:

  • Opacity. Whether it goes see-through in daylight.
  • Drape. Whether it hangs or floats.
  • Durability. How much fibre there is to abrade before a hole appears.
  • Shape retention. Whether it recovers or bags at the elbows and seat.

Fibre content tells you none of these things on its own. Cotton can be 90gsm voile or 400gsm canvas. Both are 100% cotton and they have nothing else in common.

Denim uses ounces per square yard instead, which is the same idea in different units. Roughly, 1oz/yd² is about 34gsm, so a 12oz denim is around 400gsm — genuinely heavy fabric.

The reason nobody teaches this is that most retailers do not publish weight, and the ones that do tend to be the ones with something worth publishing.

What weights should you look for?

Practical ranges, by garment type.

T-shirts: 160 to 220gsm is the useful band. Below 150gsm it will go transparent and the neckline will stretch within a season. Above 240gsm it is a heavyweight tee, which is a deliberate look but drapes stiffly.

Shirting: 110 to 140gsm for cotton poplin. This is meant to be light; heavier shirting reads workwear rather than shirt.

Fine knitwear: 150 to 200gsm for a merino base layer, 250 to 350gsm for a proper sweater. The gap between those numbers is exactly the gap between a September layer and a November one.

Sweatshirting: 300 to 400gsm. Below 280 it is a lightweight sweat that will pill; above 450 it barely moves.

Denim: 10 to 12oz for everyday jeans, 13oz+ for raw denim that will break in with real character, under 9oz for something that will bag at the knee.

Trousers and tailoring: 220 to 280gsm for a three-season wool. Under 200 is genuinely summer weight and will not hold a crease through a day.

Why does weight predict lifespan so reliably?

Because wear is abrasion, and abrasion removes fibre. More fibre means more to remove before you see it.

Every time a garment moves against itself, against a bag strap, against a chair, it loses a tiny amount of fibre from the surface. This is what pilling is — broken fibre ends balling up rather than falling away.

A heavier fabric has more fibre per square inch, so the same amount of abrasion removes a smaller proportion of it. The garment thins more slowly and thins from a higher starting point.

There is a second mechanism: yarn tension. Heavier fabrics are generally knitted or woven at higher tension, which means the yarns are held more tightly and are less free to migrate out of the structure. Loose, light knits shed fibre faster for the same amount of use.

This is why the elbow and seat go first on light fabrics and much later on heavy ones. Those are the highest-abrasion points on any garment, and they are where the difference between 140gsm and 200gsm becomes a visible hole versus a slight thinning.

The honest caveat: heavier is not always better. A heavy silk blouse is not the goal, and a 300gsm t-shirt is a specific taste. Match weight to purpose — the point is that weight is the variable you should be choosing, not ignoring.

What Nobody Tells You About Weight and Price

Fabric is sold by weight, so weight is the largest single input cost in most garments — which makes it the first thing cut.

A t-shirt at 140gsm uses roughly 30% less fabric by weight than one at 200gsm. On a large production run that is a substantial saving, and it is completely invisible on a website photograph.

This is why fast fashion feels different in the hand before you can explain why. You are registering density, and density is the thing that was removed.

How to check when the weight is not published:

  • Hold it up to a window. More light through means lighter fabric. This one test sorts most t-shirts.
  • Bunch it in your fist and release. Heavier fabric falls open with weight and drops back into shape; light fabric stays crumpled and floats.
  • Look at the shoulder seam on a hanging garment. Light fabric hangs limply from the hanger; heavier fabric holds a shape at the shoulder line.
  • Compare two garments in your hands. Absolute judgement is hard, relative judgement is easy and accurate.

The genuinely useful signal: when a brand publishes GSM in the product description, they are usually publishing it because the number is good. Nobody advertises 130gsm.

Does this apply to blends and synthetics too?

Yes, and it becomes more useful, because blends make composition labels even less informative.

A 95% cotton 5% elastane label tells you almost nothing. The elastane content changes recovery, but whether the garment holds its shape depends far more on the base weight. A 200gsm cotton-elastane jersey recovers; a 140gsm one bags at the knee regardless of the elastane.

For synthetics specifically: polyester and nylon are stronger fibre-for-fibre than cotton, so a lighter synthetic can outlast a heavier cotton. A 120gsm nylon shell is genuinely durable; a 120gsm cotton shirt is not. Adjust the ranges downward by roughly 20-30% for technical synthetics.

For wool: weight matters most, but so does whether it is worsted or woollen-spun. Worsted is smoother, denser and more durable at the same weight; woollen is loftier and warmer. If a label says worsted, the same GSM will wear longer.

For viscose and its relatives: these are weaker when wet regardless of weight, which is why viscose garments often fail at the seams in the wash rather than through abrasion. Weight helps, but handling matters more.

The general rule that survives all of this: within a single fibre type, weight is the most predictive number available. Across fibre types, use it as a starting point and adjust.

How can I find the GSM if the brand does not publish it?

You can weigh a garment you own and estimate. Weigh it in grams, then estimate its surface area in square metres — a standard adult t-shirt is roughly 1.1 to 1.3 square metres of fabric. Divide and you have a workable GSM. Do this once for your favourite tee and you will have a reference point for every comparison after.

Is heavier always more expensive?

Usually within a fibre type, but not across brands. A heavyweight fabric from a cheap mill can cost less than a fine one from a good mill. Weight tells you about behaviour and lifespan, not about refinement — a very fine 110gsm shirting can be extremely expensive and extremely good.

Does fabric weight change after washing?

The measured weight per square metre often goes up slightly, because the fabric shrinks and becomes denser. This is normal and generally a good thing for shape retention. What matters is that the garment was cut with that shrinkage accounted for, which is what pre-shrunk means.
