The Washtub Family

The tub means machine washing: the number inside is max temperature, one underline means gentle cycle, two means very gentle, a hand in the tub means hand-wash only, and an X through it means the machine is a crime scene for this garment.

The Triangle and the Circle

Triangle = bleach permissions (X’d triangle: never, which is nearly always for anything you love). Circle = dry cleaning — letters inside are instructions for the cleaner, not you; an X’d circle on ‘dry clean’ items is why you read labels before buying.

The Square Situations

Square with a circle inside = tumble dryer (dots for heat, X for the dryer-is-death garments — most of your favorites). Square with lines: flat dry (horizontal line), hang dry (vertical), shade dry (diagonal corner). The dryer X is the most-ignored, most-expensive symbol in laundry.

The Iron Dots

Iron symbol dots = temperature (one for delicates, three for linen’s wrinkled defiance). X’d iron: steam or accept the texture as intentional. When in doubt across all symbols: colder, gentler, flatter — nothing was ever ruined by too much caution.
